My gripe with 3D isn't that it's overdone, but it limits its viewing audience. I know many people who get headaches from watching 3D film, and theme parks shouldn't require their guests to take medication before visiting. If there isn't "in-your-face" action, then it's just a gimmick.

Universal has had a problem with accessibility for a while. Obviously, I don't think Universal should go full-on omnimovers and chutes, but it would be nice to ride a few rides with my older and younger relatives.

Not to wade into what is on the verge of tipping over into another screens debate, but I definitely see the point Cole is making (at least to a certain extent). Any video/film/screen-based attractions will age quickly due to advances in technology, and that's kind of unavoidable. I don't think the clarity of image and graphics on something like Transformers renders T2-3D obsolete (because honestly, I still think it's the best 3D show in Orlando), but it does make T2's age feel more pronounced.

As for whether the same thing can be said about Disney and their animatronics, an argument could certainly be made. I'll readily admit that I have a bias towards AAs/practical/physical experiences in rides, so I'm probably more forgiving of age in that context, but there have definitely been some creaky AAs (in both Disney and Universal) over the years.

I agree with Cole. The older screen attractions actually take quite a hit when compared to newer ones. Since most americans watch TV/Movies on a regular baisis, our eyes are pretty much trained to spot "bad, or old" CG work. AAs age differently because they are phsyically apart of the ride, and automatically require our imagination. We know they aren't real, so we don't expect them to look real. It doesn't really matter how advanced these figures are, when the ride uses the same AA techniques throughout.

As where screen attractions we are typically looking at real actors, or characters that are supposed to appear "real".

One of my critcisms of the redo of Haunted Mansion or Pirates, is that new effects, like say Hatbox Ghost, appear too advanced for their surroundings. In this particular case it's the new effects that seem out of place to me, but that's mainly because of nostaliga.

Rides like Peter pan work still because they haven't been changed...and I hope they never do.

I definitely agree, AAs can become incredibly dated when next to a brand spanking new bride or jack sparrow. Everything has to be updated or stuck in their time to last practical wise

Projectors are attractive to theme park operators because the maintenance cost is significantly less than an AA. You even now see Disney incorporating projectors into AA's. Those Dwarfs have a lot less mechanical moving parts because of the face projection but still look great. Even if their movements broke, no one would really notice because of the projected face gives the appearance of movement. As for the whole debate, my feeling has always been Universal is a movie studio, so I expect new and exciting ways to interact with the silver screen on their attractions. It's a way to bring the movies to life. But I am a sucker for a good AA. If you haven't been to American Adventure at Epcot in a while go sit up close and look for the Indian AA (Chief Joseph). It's movements are amazing. But I bet it cost a lot to keep him looking that good.

Yeah but the projection mapping can be insanely glaring if they don't keep up with it (look at buzz for reference). The sad thing is movies have evolved to an insane level production wise where normal, built sets are now rare and unique nowadays. Gone were the days when you'd walk into a soundstage and see ET's forest, it's now all green screens and computer magic. So in a sense universal really does grow with the times

I totally agree. Don't get me wrong, I love simulators, it's just more cool if you see the story physically in front of you. The overall experience is more breathtaking in my opinion.

I love what Universal is building. I'm enjoying the ride. That said, I too find it sad that I can't do everything in the parks with my whole family anymore. My father gets real sick from 3-D and screens, so it really cuts down on the amount of attractions we can all do together. Both my parents are sad they removed Jaws. I'm sure both will be upset when Disaster closes too.

I get both sides of the argument. Personally, from the sounds of it, they are getting it right with Kong...mixing AA's and sets with screens.

Some new news that I have been sitting on for a bit. 727 as it stands now is very low capacity. On top of this, they are toying with the idea of making it return pass only... or as they like to call it, a "queueless attraction". We shall see. :look:

:doh::bang:

The more I hear about "Fallon Over New York," the less I like the concept or even the idea of it. I know it's silly to judge an attraction before it's experienced first-hand, but this is just making me scratch my head and go "WHY!?"

Why build an attraction in your park that doesn't have the ridership capacity to handle the potential crowds you draw daily? It's the same reason why I question Busch Gardens Williamsburg for building Tempesto. I went there yesterday on a BUSY day, and maybe (MAYBE) 25% of the people in the park got to ride it. The line was 4 hours long all day long and they closed it several hours before the park closed to get the people in line on the ride by the time the park closed! We got a single ride on it because we literally RAN to it first thing in the morning. By the time we got there, the line was 20 mins and by the time we got off, it was over 2 hours! Quick Queue doesn't include that ride, because the standby line would never get anyone on...so if you want to ride it, be prepared to blow a sizable chunk of your day waiting in line for it. Quite frankly, that particular ride--fun as it may be--doesn't belong in that particular park. 727 is sounding like something similar.

Hopefully what they end up building will be an outstanding attraction that is a nice addition to the park's attraction lineup and a worthy successor to Twister (which I still love and hate to see go, but that's beside the point).

Don't know the exact number, but I'm pretty sure it is one of, if not the highest capacity attractions in the park

Really... I would have expected that it was the lowest. If anyone can explain how it is possible, I would love the explanation. I only went once and my memory tells me it was 75-100 people.

It is about 100 people per show but that works out to around 2000 per hour. The main show scene lasts about 3 minutes and you spent your last 6 minutes 'in line' watching two pre-shows with a couple minutes of walking/transition time in between. I recently did the booth tour and got to see a crowd filter in and out, then watch the main show scene reset. It is a well timed people eater.
