Wow this thread is going no where fast. I realize this is a discussion board, but maybe we should stop with the constant criticism until you actually see it in person. It's just tiresome and endless.

Avatar land isn't going to change your life. We get it.

I look forward to the actual impression thread.

It's nice to have low expectations, but walking into any experience with the thought that you'll hate it, won't change your mind.

Maybe you need a different hobby than visiting discussion forums?

People having opinions that don't support or reinforce your own beliefs seems to really distress you.

This is all rather heartbreaking considering we almost had this instead:

James Cameron has had a handful of creative masterpieces, but Avatar ain't one of them. Jules Verne captures my imagination vastly more, especially when viewed through the prism of Walt Disney and Harper Goff.

Some plants actually look quite close to bioluminescent species. However, some (like the blue tube plant) look more like they just have a colored light bulb in them. I doubt it's that much of an issue, as it probably doesn't read well in pics rather than in person.

It was successful on exactly one level: financial. Beyond that... it didn't exactly reinvent the wheel.

Suicide Squad won an academy award. I will leave it at that. Just because something gets nominated doesn't always mean its actually good.

Well it actually reintroduced 3D to cinema, and Paved the way for 3D TVs, and Videogames. It also helped bring IMAX back from financial collapse.

So it did a lot more for the film industry then just make money and win awards.

It only won awards for the eye candy aspects, which is clearly what James Cameron spent the most time working on. The other nominations it received doesn't exactly scream innovative storytelling, the majority of them were the just the standard set that the biggest blockbusters get each year. Yes, it got nominated for Best Picture, but that was also the first year they increased the number of nominees to ten, and yes, it got nominated for Best Director, so this was naturally going to happen after James Cameron hadn't had a movie out in over a decade and the notoriety of how freaking long it took to make Avatar helped to create unstoppable hype around the flick. I'm sure it also doesn't hurt that it came out in December when there weren't a lot of other movies out and just a scant two months before the Academy Awards. I have to wonder what those nominations would have looked like if Avatar had come out in like May instead.

That's true, but one could argue that that's just another facet of the financial success. Whether Avatar actually contributed anything to the art of 3-D storytelling is debatable, but it sure did help the movie studios to find another way to make more money.
