The CinemaScore is dire.

I know it's counterintuitive to think a B- is a disaster, because to get a B- on a homework assignment is something most students would be fine with (or at least tolerate!), but in terms of CinemaScore, it really is a major signal of dissatisfaction for a blockbuster, specifically (horror films can get away with lower scores).

Damn! I had no clue it dropped until right this second. Did it have a nonexistent marketing budget or have I been living in the dark?

Small marketing for a character that has limited appeal in America.

That feels like a great opening, I haven’t been tracking what the expectations were for this film. I’m very worried the “eh” word of mouth will kill its legs though.

Even with that opening, it's going to struggle to break even. I would expect a quite steep drop-off in its second weekend given the CinemaScore (which has been generally predictive of a movie's longevity).

We'll see. It has already made its production budget back. It's always assumed that the marketing is about $80-100 million more, and that's all it needs to break even - so it's very possible it hits that.

Just as a general rule for movies of this scope, a film has to make three times its production budget to "break even" in its theatrical run. That accounts for the marketing/distribution spend as well as the cut theaters take. Additionally... I am fairly confident that $180 million number is underreported.

It's a decent start considering everything working against it, but the second week will be the real test, IMO.

Deadline reports that it needs to make $425 million globally to just break even, but that's assuming the $180 million budget is accurate... which it almost certainly is not.

I'm an quite confident we'll get a report in a couple of months, as we often do with big productions, about how the movie's real budget was in the $250+ million range. That $180 number has felt like spin to me, because no studio ever volunteers an accurate number up front.

Even if the number were $180 million (it isn't), $425 wouldn't be enough. Deadline is doing some spin on behalf of Disney/general industry PR.

Why would the $180 number not be accurate?

You'd think that they would be required to give accurate numbers for the shareholders.

I just hope that even if this movie underperforms we still get a Cap 5. I want more Anthony Mackie in the mcu outside of Avengers 5 and 6

I understand your feeling, but I want more movies of the other characters as well. specially with all the new characters coming soon. sam already got a full show as well. and this movie. ( obviously I wanna see more of him, but not another full movie, maybe a season 2 of the show)
