Yea bro, Disney's new offerings on fleek. Universal over there all ratchet with their restaurants.

Didn't say Universal's restaurants were "ratchet", but DS dining and beverage options (from the sounds of it with the most recent announcement) will far exceed everything on property at Universal and that's including hotel restaurants, in terms of both quality and variety. Maybe I'm in the minority, but with the streak Universal is on, I'd like to see them tackle more high-quality dining outlets. They have the "middle-price" outlets covered.

I have to ask, are we judging 'fine dining' by the price or the quality? Having 'middle price' restaurants that serve food as good as those charging more is not a bad thing as far as I am concerned. In fact, in the long run it will only make Universal look better.

Edit: After some more thought, here are some other reasons why Universal should currently strive for quality food and dining experiences at a 'middle price' point. When you think about it, most Disney guests stay on site so they have easy access to DS and not a whole heck of a lot outside of the resort. By that rationale, DS is destined to do pretty well. Universal still does not have a majority of its population staying on site so they have to be more careful with their food offerings. People wanting a $50 steak can just as easily get it down the road from Universal and since they are most likely staying off site, they probably will. Until the balance shifts at Universal, they should stick with the plan they seem to be implementing.

One further thought, Universal has a larger locals base than WDW. Quality 'middle price' point meals are a better way to keep the locals coming back for more as opposed to just driving to Sand Lake/Dr. Phillips after their time in the parks.

Just because food is good quality doesn't make it 'fine-dining'. I'm talking more gourmet options, celebrity chef outlets, top notch experiences. Cowfish has great food, good enough service, and a nice experience, however would you consider it in the same tier of say a Wolfgang Puck or Gordon Ramsay establishment? That's what I'm getting at by fine dining. Doesn't have to be Michelin-starred or anything, but my family and I always have one or two "nice" dinners every vacation, and at Universal on property, there aren't many options for that. I like the plan they have, but I'd love to see more unique dining options and especially some more gourmet outlets for the next phase of Citywalk. They have the inexpensive and middle price ground covered. Would love to see some real Asian flavors or a nice steakhouse in CW, even something Mediterranean or Greek inspired would be welcome. Additionally there's not really a great Seafood place on prop unless you count Lombard's, which I've personally never tried.

Since when did celebrity chef equal fine dining? I suppose it does for the kind of people who automatically order whichever bottle of wine is at the most expensive end of the wine list, rather than which would actually go best with their meal.

If we're talking class, well, Cowfish doesn't do their own frozen food line, so they win there.

I do think kingcooger asked the key question: "are we judging 'fine dining' by the price or the quality?"

My parents were disappointed in several meals on our last trip to WDW but raved about Tchoup Chop and Vivo at UOR. Disney's Dining Plan has hurt a lot of restaurants on property.

In some places, bloody sheets and ratty towels is the highest premium quality you can get.

I don't agree, but it is your opinion...

I will argue that the affordable nature of CityWalk makes it more appealing to me as a consumer...and the food is still good (imagine that)

Honestly, most of the CityWalk restaurants wipe the floor with their Disney counterparts, and usually at half the price.

What's wrong with a $50 steak? Go to any decent steakhouse around the world and you're paying at least $40 for an 8oz filet. Never got why people were so up in arms about Boathouse...the prices are fair in regards to what the restaurant is.

WDW's and the Orlando tourist market in general isn't used to paying for high quality food?

Yeah, in that respect they definitely do. You can pretty much get a great meal at Vivo for the same price you'd pay at Pecos Bill.

All of the new Universal restaurants in CityWalk are great food for the price you pay. But they aren't fine dining either.

Should also consider the size. You pretty much have 1 fine dining spot at each resort, and 1 in CityWalk. That's 4. Could they use 1 more? Sure.... but I don't think that's the biggest concern of CityWalk they need to address. (Not that there is many)

I'm not really saying that they do need more. Vivo and the other new places suit their park going audience well and the fine dining establishments at the hotels fit for a nice dinner after the parks for those who pay more anyway (by staying at those resorts).

The prices are subjective depending on what you are used to. I live near and work in London so I often pay 'London Prices' at restaurants and bars etc.

When I go to Orlando, the prices are not so dissimilar to those I pay in London, I don't batter an eyelid on the whole.

However my father in law was outraged at some of the prices in Orlando as he is used to paying little over $10 for a three course meal at home. He preferred to eat at Denny's at least once a day for most of the vacation!
