I don't think the issue is the media getting it wrong. They knew the facts and were being lazy, as well as were reporting it as though they were speaking to children. It was easier for them to simply say "Willy Wonka" than it was to simple explain the concept and report it as what it really is. Gotta love the media these days.

The only upside to the reporting and mentions of Willy Wonka is that it's getting far more attention than it otherwise would have.

Yeah this is essentially a generic Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. The media is actually probably conveying the idea of what this is to people better by referencing Wonka. It's obviously misleading though as it's not the licensed IP. This is pretty much the equivalent to if they had built a Transmorphers ride, everyone know what it's supposed to be.

I don't know if I agree with that 100%. I mean, people preoccupation with chocolate and chocolate factories predates the Charlie and The Chocolate Factory book and subsequent movies. The book itself spawned from the authors own experience around them. I don't think this is Universal's way of trying to capitalize on the IP without actually using it, but rather a way to expand and target people's love and interest in the topic. The fact that so many want to link the restaraunt to the IP just goes to show you the timeless nature of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

I think you're both right (Stitch & 8Film). Put both posts together and that's the story. :)

We live in the age of click bait titles. You're spot on though, any publicity is good.

I agree I don't think this is Universal intention, but it's what the vast majority of people will think when they see or hear of this. I like the direction they went with this, it's just going to get annoying hearing this referred to as Willy Wonka for the foreseeable future.

So, Universal is building a Wally Winka Chocolate Factory and having these guys work it?

Amen to that! It's already annoying. Just check out the comments on Universal's Facebook annoucement about it. It's a stream of "I want a Wonka Bar!" "Snozzberry Shakes better be there!" and my personal favorite, "They need to have golden tickets!"

Some are even exclaiming that it's causing them to change plans from a Disney trip to a Universal trip. Man are they going to be disappointed LOL.

It could also be Universal wasn't allowed to work with the Wonka property.

This is my assumption. I have to think if your going to build a chocolate factory you would at least try to get the IP.

Or maybe creating their own branding is smarter in this case, as it's essentially a savory restaurant with a dessert focus. Some might feel more inclined to try Toothsome burgers, pasta, chicken, and seafood dishes. But a Wonka Alfredo might not sound so appetizing to some because of the brand's strong association to wrapped chocolate/candy products.

Universal has shown less interest in IPs with it's restaurants as of late. I doubt they even approached the Wonka ip.

Is there an arms race going on with construction walls? First Hulk with the toons and lighting, then RoL at AK with the Navi' signs and now the Toothsome wall re-purposing props from the warehouses. Seems to be some escalation going on.

Edit to add the F&F wall and several other small walls had exceptional themeing.

I'm just guessing. Perhaps legal was concerned with copyright & patent violations if they would have expanded it to include some ride through and demonstration type events. Hershey World Chocolate attraction & ride and Wonka story & movie rights come to mind.

Copyright doesn't really cover things like that. Anyone can make a chocolate factory with a ride, they just can't call it Wonka or Hershey.

My bad that's what I meant lol. I'm happier they didn't go the wonka route honestly. That deserves to be in a theme park not city walk. Also this matches with the surrounding, unique restaurants perfectly. I'm all for it

So.... later this year. Would I have a shot at getting to try this place out in mid-August?
