Condemned, you say? Doors that are bolted shut? If true, that's sad (and kinda scary...in a cool way)

Yeah, all the inside doors are bolted shut. They have a small area dedicated to the characters. If you know anything about asbestos, its a VERY expensive thing to deal with and when this building is for public entertainment, it would be scrutinized so much to make sure of its safety that its my guess that it would be cheaper to just tear the building down. They would still have to clean up enough to keep the air clean around the building while its demo'd, but still cheaper than a complete overhaul. Also, If you look at the size of the lot the building sits on, its rather large. If they were to lets say build another sound stage, they could build it taller like Shrek is. Then they might be able to fit a decent sized attraction like a ride perhaps. Hard to say, but this thing is an eyesore, just like Cafe La Bamba being closed for health hazards and Garden of Allah for being nothing but something to look at.

I'm not sure Cafe La Bamba/Garden of Allah are off limits... Cafe La Bamba was opened briefly for a peak season recently if I recall, not to mention it was open for a full month+ for HHNXX (as the VIP Lounge). Garden of Allah was a character staging area for FEAR and his minions if I'm not mistaken for the Fear Revealed zone back in 2010 as well, and in 2008 one of Allah's buildings served as the Legendary Truth HQ.....

Asbestos is only a problem when exposed or disturbed.

Also wasn't it banned completely in the US (for a period of time) in 1989? How much asbestos would have been in this building anyway?

I will be back there in a few days and try to get some more information on the condition of the building.

I've never bought the whole "condemned" story about SS44, especially with the asbestos story. Just doesn't seem plausible when basically the entire park was built at the same time.

How old are the sound stages, wasn't it working studio before a park? It could be possible for asbestos to be present as it was used in a lot of building products, including adhesives for floor tile.
Seems strange that there is a part of the building so structurally deficient that no one can enter but the rest of the building is OK.

Hollywood was the studio that became a park. Orlando's studios and park were built at the same time.

If they tore it down, they would have to deal with the asbestos in the same way, it would have to be disposed of in the same way prior to demolition. So either abandon it or clean it up are their two options. Any act of demolition would release respirable particles into the air around the parks, unless they're talking about full containment during demo which would be ridiculously expensive. Asbestos based glue for floor tiles hasn't really been in use since the 60's early 70's, it wasn't abandoned for safety reasons, they just found cheaper glues that performed just as well. Unfortunately, it takes less to make asbestos hazardous to health than say, lead based paint or silica. Not to mention any work on the building would have to have baseline air testing, and continuous air monitoring non stop during the demolition process. Anything less not only can get OSHA involved, but can open USF up to lawsuits for anyone that wants to claim mesothelioma. To me, there's little chance they would demo it outright without a LOT of incentive.

Ok so tonight I found out through sources at work that are VERY credible that the following is going to happen:

Jaws/Amity will be a ride attraction that is once again revolving around Harry Potter.

The next project following that will be the demolition of Soundstage 44 and Monster Cafe...pretty much that whole block. Now whats going there is yet to be confirmed, BUT my strong suspicion would be Transformers and the reason being is that since USF is themed, the best most suitable place for Transformers would be near Hollywood. T2 rumors have been flying as to it being replaced, but that building just isnt big enough for a major attraction and no talk as to the replacement is happening anytime soon. The construction going on where the old Hard Rock Cafe used to be is said to be some new trailers and buildings for Entertainment dept. Also, Fear Factor is said to be going back to Wild West Show. The lagoon is also said to be in early stages of development of another show. And a side note, IOA Lost Continent is about to go bye bye and WWOHP will be extended through into that area.

I am 99.9% sure of my words here...I said it, you heard it...and im going to continue to bring info as I hear it. Look for SS44 and the rest of that block to be gone before the end of 2012.

Sounds reasonable and likely to me. Although I'm believing less and less that Transformers will come to USF.

That's very, very interesting. Problem being is that I don't think that even if Monsters and SS44 are demo'd, there still won't be enough room for Transformers, given the size of other SS in Hollywood that it's being built in. Granted, I can see what you're describing happening, but it'd be more monetarily beneficial if Universal replaced T2 before chasing after another huge project (after Amity, of course).

If this was to happen I feel like its going to have to happen much sooner. Given the apparent aggressive timeline for Potter 2.0 I would think Transformers would have to be up and running before Potter opened. If Potter comes in 2014 the Transformers comes in 2013. If Potter in 2015 then Transformers in 2014.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense, but doesn't it also make sense to use the big chunk of land between MiB and Simpsons and behind there? I wonder why they couldn't add Transformers or whatever there. It's a big space!

Whatever goes in Jaws could be done by the end of 2013 or early 2014.

Uhhhh. No. Not even close. It'd be a miracle to finish anything there by early 2015, let alone 14.
