I’m not expecting anything astounding story or concept wise, but I hope this has some neat effects for a night show at the very least, the last one was just projecting on water which was... nothing impressive.

personally, I was impressed by the water screens and I truly loved the water screens, the pre show before they projected anything on them.

that was different and neat to me.

Here are some photos from Tuesday. The lagoon has been dyed a blue-greenish color now.

Aren't most nighttime shows clip shows? I guess Rivers of Life and IllumiNations aren't, but otherwise nearly all of them are. Even the vast majority of Disney fireworks shows are now with the projection mapping. Even Fantasmic is a clip show with live action scenes.

Fantasmic! isnt a clip show either. It uses water screens, yes, but other than that, it’s a theatrical spectacle.

It's a clip show with theatrical transitions into the next clip segment.

Why is "clip show" such a bad word? Does that make it bad?

So basically anything other than an original three act story structure without any previous clips is a "clip show" and not good?

It's a somewhat lazy description, sort of like "ScreenZ!" It' more complicated than just "a clip show". WoC is a clip show in its fundamental form but it uses unique animation and breaks apart the video to various planes of viewing. But CineSpec was also a clip show and projected raw movie clips on water screens. Gotta dig deeper.

Does the dye affect the colour of the water as it comes out of the fountains, or is the colour filtered out? I have always wondered haha

You are being very lazy with how you’re describing shows if just because it uses a few (short) water screen segments it qualifies Fantasmic! as a “clip show”.

Fantasmic is easily the most theatrical and also a very unique night show when compared. So much goes into making that show happen every night.

It also has a relatively clear story with a clear story arc, conflict, and climax.

There's a large gray area between "featured" and "not appearing" as well :creep:

Don't get too caught up in the wording. In this case there is no grey area. Technically, nothing is "featured" in a clip show. It's like saying Beauty and the beast, Tarzan or Rapunzel aren't "featured" in Happily Ever After. No one would say that.

So for this- it is essentially translated as Legacy saying HP would not be in the show where Martin has now questioned that.

Shows that are mainly clips are ones that I watch once and that's it. Shows with impressive visual effects coupled with great music are worth seeing over and over again. This is why I'm so happy to see all those fountains.

If anyone is expecting this to not showcase Universal IPs and the music of John Williams, then I don't know what you're expecting

The problem I have with a clip show is that I love movies but don't want to see a highlight reel on a water screen pimped up with effect to expand the clip. The movie is great on it's own and I don't need a out of context collection of this tarted up with crap.
It's the same as projection shows. I love the potter one (except for the dancing part) because it honers the projection surface and doesn't have clips from the movies but still is able to make me feel as delighted as I felt watching the movies. Unlike Star Wars nights at DHS where they project some crap on the ToT or using the whole castle at MK as a screen for some clips. It looks terrible.

Universal has a huge history. Present me a show who shows me that history without the clips. Start with a narrator and the black and white area presented in sepia colors, go to sound and have music tell the story. Have Grue tell that story to his kids and have the Minions act it out but don't use any clips of those movies.

The problem with the past 2 is that the clips were the show. Hardly any other content to watch. The occasional firework and minimal fountains left the whole content of the show to be on the water screens

So, you want all original content then?

I wouldn't be surprised if we get some of that here

So you want completely new content and story... Yeah. That's just not realistic here. Not for Universal. And actually... Not really for any show with a reasonable budget.

You want them to celebrate the movies without showing the movies... Most people would probably differ from your opinion. For many, they have to see clips from the film to even know what the show was talking about or referring to. The general public barely know the films to begin with.

Original content is expensive. Original animation can be as expensive as $800k-$1mil per second. Live action isn't much cheaper these days with all of the post processing done to make films look "cinema-like." Making new media for shows like this wouldn't be any cheaper. You're still having the studio make assets that match the level of the films. By that measure, a typical show could be tens of millions in just media alone. Together with equipment and construction, that could make a show unaffordable very quickly. There is absolutely no way that a show like this can make a return on investment with media being that expensive, and for what? The existing films already provide a ton of previously made content that is relevant, recognizeable, and good. It's just up to the show creators now to do something creative with that instead of just playing clips. And playing clips alone isn't a cheap option either. Every time a clip is played, there are multiple royalties and license fees paid to the studios, creators, and actors featured.

The words "clip show" get thrown around in a derogatory way as if using film clips automatically makes a show bad. I completely disagree. While I want more than just clips on water screens, using existing clips in a new way to build a show seems incredibly relevant at a movie studio theme park. It doesn't make the show cheap or lazy, it's a creative path that can be done well or done poorly.

Somewhere, someone got everyone on a high horse about shows like this and made the word "clip show" a swear word. Think about it realistically, the criticism doesn't completely make sense.
