Director James Gunn under fire for offensive tweets [Update: Fired]

Gunn-as-writer is substantially more important than Gunn-as-director.

This 100%. I know Guardians is Gunn's baby and it would have been awesome for him to complete it as the director BUT if they had thrown out his script and had someone new write the final installment, it would have been muuuuch more obvious that something was different than just getting a new director.

seems kind of silly that they are going to still use his script...I mean, what's the point of firing him then?

I don't really care what Disney does, nor do I have any harsh opinions either way about this. I think the moral of the story is that the Internet is forever, and celebs/politicians and other public figures really need to be cautious about what they post online.

The way I would spin it if I were called upon to do such a thing would be this way:

Gunn finished his script for VOL. 3 before the controversy and his firing. It was completed work, and it had been paid for by Disney. His direction of the film would be new work, taking place after the controversy came to light.

Ultimately a kind of silly distinction, but that's probably how they're rationalizing it to themselves.

And in any case, using his script is the right call.

I mean he’s getting paid $7-$10 million anyway and his script will have the tone that the movie needs.

Might as well take what you paid him for and still release on schedule instead of paying someone else to write an entirely new script, which pushes the release date back, etc.

It’s hypocritical, but it makes the most sense for everyone involved.

I really hope they give the movie to the director of Thor Ragnarok. for me personally not only was thor 3 better than guardians of the galaxy 2, but it was my favorite marvel movie I've watched in theaters. I never even cared that much for Thor but that movie made me love him now. the director's humor would fit so well with a new guardians, and i wish he added to the script

I agree with all of this. GotG2 got too smaltzy with Starlord playing catch with Dad. Really?

Bring on more Goldblum and his melty stick.

I found guardians 2 very boring and it dragged a lot. some scenes were kinda cool (anything with Mantis was great, Rocket and Drax were very funny) but everything with Ego was pretty boring and the movie is not as cool as the first.

but Thor Ragnarok was incredible from beginning to end. it Did have some slow parts but the dialogue and the humor was pretty good.

After watching this video it seems very clear to me that judging from James Gunn kind of humor and his previous works he should have never ever been hired by disney. I think disney messed up big time when they hired him on the first place.
I never knew about his PG porn comedy clips or his other stuff, I don't even judge him for those pg porn comedy videos but what the hell was disney thinking when they got him? His troma work is very crass too.
whose decision was to hire him to begin with? seems crazy

Dont judge the video by its title, she actually defends him in the video, and makes the case that he's much better off by getting fired from a place like disney.

yeah but what was Disney thinking... i seriously question their hiring of Gunn and what their thought process was. and im even more surprised that it took this long for Gunn to have a controversy this big. their hiring seems irrational now. (Specially when no one really knew what guardians of the galaxy was and he wasn't a big draw at the box office)

Dude, with all due respect, you gotta get out of the YouTube conspiracy theorist/ultra-conservative rabbit hole.

They hired him because he had a unique, irreverent voice and was a good filmmaker. They weren't wrong to do that.

I agree. But I think his writing would be even more important film 1 vs film 3. Film 3, he has repoire and knowledge of the cast and they him. They’d all work together much better, etc.

Him directing film 3 definitely would’ve been the vast preference. But at least we get the writing. I’d be more than fine having him direct as well.

As I’ve always said- I can easily disassociate Hollywood from reality. They are all whack jobs- mainly because they’re narcosisits simply because they’re famous. Human beings weren’t designed to have everyone flock and swoon to their very existence and hang onto their every word. It full blown messes with their brain. It’s a world we, quite literally, can’t comprehend because we aren’t famous.
So if Tom Cuise wants to jump on a couch like a loon and preach Scientology, it isn’t going to make me dislike Mission Impossible. Hollywood is another planet to me and I don’t view them as human beings, because they aren’t like 99.999999999% of us.

disney is all about their family fanbase. right?
gunn is the farthest thing from that. his content is very edgy and very adult.
There are 100 other directors they could have picked, that are not as edgy, without the baggage.
i am not conservative by the way, nor I ever claimed to be.
I never claimed anything about a conspiracy.

As much as I would have loved for Gunn to be able to finish this franchise, it won’t really matter too much in the grand scheme of things because the general public won’t even notice that Vol 3 has a different director. They will see that their favorite rag-tag group of guardians are back for a new film and be excited. It’s only we who follow these types of stories that will notice. And we are the minority.

Over 9o% of the general public couldn't tell you who directed Avengers Infinity War or the The Last Jedi, they just liked one and thought the other was a dog.
