This casting news couldn't be any more amazing. The search for an actor to portray the King Beyond the Wall himself has been an ongoing process since the role wasn't announced with the other Season 3 additions. That search ended today!

EW broke the incredible news that actor Ciarán Hinds has been cast as Mance Rayder. Hinds is a British actor who has garnered acclaim for a slew of many great movie and television roles. Fans might remember his turns in Munich, There Will Be Blood, John Carter, The Debt, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and his recent appearance on the USA series Political Animals. Also, he is the newest cast member who is also a Harry Potter actor, joining the ranks of Natalia Tena, Julian Glover, David Bradley, and Michelle Fairley. This also marks his return to a costume drama on HBO, since Hinds played the pivotal role of Julius Caesar on the network series Rome.

I can't wait to see what he does as the leader of the Wildlings!

A writer for the show said in an interview that the showrunners are striving to make the series more cinematic and less conventional.

From Hypable

Game of Thrones writer Vanessa Taylor has revealed some details about season 3, and how it’s gonna be different from the second season!

Speaking to Jeff Goldsmith on his Q&A podcast, Taylor talks about her work on season 3 so far. She reveals that showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, “seem to be becoming more visual storytellers” as the show moves forward, and especially the opening scenes of the season 3 episodes seem to be “particularly cinematic.”

Further, she says that in terms of the writing, season 2 was “a bit more conventional,” and that season 3 will be, “less about clever dialogue and transition,” moving instead to a more visual, cinematic focus.

While Taylor does call this difference quite subtle, it is nonetheless an interesting comment – especially considering how visual and cinematic Game of Thrones already was in seasons 1 and 2.

On the one hand, the toning down of clever dialogue could mean less Owns, but on the other, one of the show’s greatest strengths is its epic feel, and it’s a good thing that the writers are acknowledging this and writing for that.

Game of Thrones returns next year, on March 31. It will cover the first half of the third novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords.

Several new cast members were announced at Comic-Con in an introductory video, and more announcements have been trickling out over the months since season 2 concluded on HBO.

With the cast rapidly expanding, and some really iconic characters being introduced, we’re sure the show won’t completely lose its penchant for witty dialogue, but after the success of the very cinematic “Blackwater,” the writers are likely looking to replicate that and to continue to wow fans and critics alike.

Thanks to BleedingCool for the news tip.

Fewer unnecessary scenes with prostitutes would be nice.

Oh my God, how have I never seen this?

Wait...I know. I sorta gave up on SNL because it's rarely funny anymore.

Anyway, this is fabulous. As much as I love the show, HBO needs to cut back a little on the sex scenes that didn't exist in the book. Because the book has enough sex already.

Seriously. Sex does not make a show. There are MALE fans of the series complaining about some of the sex scenes. I've never seen that before in any fandom.

EW also posted the following interviews with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss regarding the extended run times of the episodes of Season 3.

'Game of Thrones' gets super-sized season 3 -- EXCLUSIVE

The biggest production on TV of one of the biggest stories in fantasy is about to get a little, well, bigger.

The Game of Thrones team is creating a “super-sized” third season of the hit series.

With showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss tackling content from the first half (roughly) of author George R.R. Martin’s largest Song of Ice and Fire novel (the 973-page fan-favorite A Storm of Swords), the writer-producer duo are delivering slightly longer episodes to the network. There’s still 10, but you’ll get a little more each week than previous seasons.

“There’s almost another full episode’s worth of extra minutes spread across the season,” Weiss says. “One of the great liberties with HBO is we’re not forced to come in at a specific time. We can’t be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility.”

“A super-sized season, as befitting Storm of Swords,” Benioff adds. “Last year we had a lot of 52-minute episodes. This year is a lot of 56, 57.”

In fact, the third season finale is expected to run more than an hour — a move that requires special permission from the network (previously, the show’s pilot and its second season finale exceeded an hour). Episodes are still being calibrated so exact times could change, but HBO and producers are confident the season will deliver more Thrones than ever before. Says HBO in a statement: “All 10 episodes gained a minute or two from past seasons with the finale very possibly exceeding 60 minutes.”

“So for people clamoring for another episode, it’s in there,” Weiss says. “It’s just been cut into tiny pieces.”

From Winter is Coming

Game of Thrones to get an official beer

In a case of two awesome things coming together to make something twice as awesome, HBO has announced that they are partnering with a craft brewery in the US to create beers inspired by Game of Thrones. The first beer, Iron Throne Blonde Ale, will launch the day of the season three premiere and three more beers will follow sometime after. Check out the press release below.

HBO Global Licensing is constantly raising the bar on brand extensions for their hit shows, and they’re showing their creativity once again through a new partnership with Brewery Ommegang to release a series of themed beers based on the critically-acclaimed drama, Game of Thrones.

Unlike previous efforts by brewers, which were typically executed as ‘brewed under license’ arrangements or straightforward product placement pushes, the collaboration between Ommegang and HBO is focused on developing truly unique beers that directly tie into themes, characters and nuances of the series of the medieval-like fantasy realm of Westeros and surrounding kingdoms.

The inaugural beer, Iron Throne Blonde Ale, will launch nationally timed to the season 3 premiere of the show on March 31st. It will be available on draft and in 750ml bottles for the suggested retail price of $8.50 per bottle beginning mid to late March. This will be followed by the launch of another Game of Thrones-inspired beer in the Fall and two additional beers in subsequent seasons.

Ommegang beers, which are created by Brewmaster Phil Leinhart, have gained a national following by connoisseurs of fine beer and are distributed in 45 states and internationally. The Belgian-style brewery is located on a 136-acre farmstead in Cooperstown, New York.
