Exactly, so you won't hold it up to a printed text bit and get a translation. It has to be spoken and you have to speak it for it to be understood.

That's why the translator talks.

(Oh no, will we be hearing translators going off all around us in ride queues. Might need to re-think this!)

Sooooo, the "first" peice of IP merch isn't even canon?

This is going to be painful.

Well the translator was made in collaboration with James Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, and Dr. Paul Frommer, creator of the Na’vi language for Avatar, "to acquire audio recordings of spoken Na’vi words for the translator."

"The Na’vi have no written language, so the translator will be a helpful tool for any human visiting Pandora."

So, it's about as canon as it can get I guess.

Plus, look. They're colorful! :ears:

Well, remember, James Cameron says that this land takes place generations after the film series, when a tourism company is taking humans to visit Pandora... Sooooo, technically anything James Cameron says becomes (technically) canon to the extended-universe-world-building-storyline-galaxy-franchise-synergy-conglomerate-system.

Most common Pandoran phrase that will be used during high school trips to AK. I have tail. You have tail. Meet me in bushes under floating mountains. ;)...........I don't think this is going to be anywhere near the HP wand popularity. Epcot should have taught Disney the lesson that kids don't want to be educated when they go to theme parks. They want a break from school like activities. They just want to have fun.

The only kids in high school now that have seen Avatar are the ones that their parents forced them to watch it "preparing" for their WDW trip.

I remember when they expanded and changed Flo's in Cars 2 so it'd match the layout in Carsland.

It will feel educational to kids, so they won't embrace it. Too much like schoolwork.

I mean it's kinda cool. It shouldn't cost more than $19.99.

Sorcerers of the MK stuff still sells well, though. There's a sizeable audience of Disney card collectors.

This better not be their main merch item or else, yes, you are right.

Yeah, I've paid for many an AP and drinks with the SotMK cards. Plus I got a five mile walk every morning for 2 years. Longest walk I get at UOR is from valet to Finn's

I think the translator is a neat idea in theory. Not something I'll spend money on under any circumstances, but neat, and fits a kind of "edutainment" mindset.

We've always known that merchandise for Pandora was going to be a bit of a struggle. I'm not going to fault Disney for trying some weird things, and I'm certainly not going to compare their efforts to Universal's Harry Potter stuff, because that's not productive in any way. That topic has been beaten to death like the proverbial dead horse.
