Has anyone been able to confirm the material the stairs are made out of? Apparently stair construction can make or break an entire immersive theme.

It honestly doesn't seem to far fetched. They could just make the entrances obvious with monoliths or a large fake tree.

They already use pictorial totems everywhere else in the park:

This is a Joe Rohde thing which means a lot of impractical big idea crap that never works right. The original plan for AK was no maps so you would just explore organically. No signs would fit that same kind of impractical idea. They will need SOME kind of signage though because every attraction needs those warning signs for ride requirements.

Try getting to Rafiki's. Finding that train without a map would be a nightmare and even worse if you didn't know it was there.

Yep, but that was Joe's plan. That went away quickly though when guests got too confused.

As a general rule, Disney doesn't do nearly as many signs as I think they should. The idea is supposed to be "the helpful, friendly Cast Members will assist all the guests", which is true to a point. The problem is if the guests don't speak English or don't ask the question or don't find a CM or the CM has to answer a thousand other questions they are SOL. Every time I go to TTC and I see guests confused about where the MK entrance is I think all they need to do is put some route maps up for the ferry/monorail lines. People have no clue how to get around WDW property...

But then again, Rafiki's might be the most boring land in existence. It would be significantly better if people couldn't find the train to take them back there and waste their time.

If they have a sign with a river and a boat, with the language in navi and an arrow, that's pretty self explanatory. I just don't think they'll have an entrance like Jurassic Park River Adventure or Kong that's in your face.

Maybe it will be like Disneyland's Fantasyland. The signs are there but you have to look (example Snow White is engraved into the stone instead of a sign, as part of the building)

What if you got to Rafiki's but couldn't find your way out? What if you have a FP for Flight of Passage and cannot find the entrance? Or the restroom?

If that happened at Rafiki's you'd have a solid case with the world's human rights commission of cruel & unusual punishment. ....or, got into what you thought was a line for Flight of Passage, got through the door after a long wait, and all that was there was a row of urinals.
