Assuming there will be cast members to interact with, I think families would have a lot of fun trying to carry out conversations in another language.

Hmm...I can see how that may work it was free (an app on a phone for example) but I can't see a boat load of customers lining up to hand over hard earned cash for this.

Interesting idea IMO but not executed well for me.

Why would someone buy something like that when they could easily make an app for free?

It's part of the merch strategy. If visitors walk into the land seeing others peering aimlessly into their phone, they would probably assume that they're just "doing something on their phone". This way, new visitors will wonder what "that is".

Same strategy Universal uses. Not everyone walks into WWoHP knowing about the wands, but when they see others using one, they inquire where they can get one.

Marketing 101.

It's a toy. Kids will like it. I like that additional card packs will be available. And it glows at night! Okay, I want one.

"Guests using the translator can learn how to pronounce 90 Na’vi words using interchangeable translation cards. The device also lights up at night, which makes it perfect for nighttime explorations on Pandora.”

The Na’vi Translator set will come packaged with 15 translation cards. The device has a clasp that extends up to 12-inches and can be attached to a belt or backpack.

Additional translation cards will be sold in trading card packs, each containing eight randomly selected cards.

Difference even before wands were interactive, people wanted one. This is a stretch and a waste of resources.

But people will still be looking down at this translator (which is a similar size to a phone) so to the average guest people will still be 'doing something on their phone'.

Too say this is a comparison to wands is a stretch.

It would be the equivalent of Uni selling something to allow you talk Parselmouth

In your opinion. If the cast members execute this well, I would certainly buy one.

Die hard Disney fans will want one purely because certain batches of cards are "rare." It's brilliant. It's like any collectible merch people go nuts for cause they can't have it.

Edit: By brilliant I mean - as a sales technique. Not by some revolutionary design standard.

Plus, some of us are just nerdy enough to want to actually learn Na'vi. Gotta brush up for the next four sequels 'ya know! Won't even need subtitles.

lol, I don't know about that. The girlfriend already gets super embarrassed when I bring my T-Rex doll to Jurassic World movies.

I'll just have to memorize the entire Na'vi dictionary before the sequels come out... Lord knows I probably have enough time... Ouuucch, Avatar sequel burn.

Seriously though. I will buy this thing.

I don't understand why you'd want to learn to speak the language. It's all auditory. I mean, ok, I can get learning it. It you have to speak it and hear it - there is no written language.

So how it integrates into the land confuses me.

Bingo! If its at a decent price point, kids will want one. Just like those lightup wands and other trinkets they sell for the nighttime parades. My kids all have the non-interactive wand from our first trip to WWHP and then when we went back, they were all clamoring for the interactive one.

For another wrinkle on this, how about an accompanying app with QR codes on the cards that made it even more interactive allowing for other features the basic card reader could not handle (putting together sentences, e.g.)

And why do you need the translator?

Can't you just learn the words and say them out loud for any possible interaction in the land?

I do like that the cards are color coded for nouns, adjectives, etc, plus they have pictures to help associate the words. Makes learning fun! Hooked on Na-vi-onics worked for me!

Wasn't N'avi an oral only language?

Exactly, so you won't hold it up to a printed text bit and get a translation. It has to be spoken and you have to speak it for it to be understood.
